ROYCE CHOKED OUT BY WALLID IN BRAZIL!!!
by Eddie Goldman (Full Contact Fighter)
In what has to be considered a shocking upset, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu icon Royce Gracie was choked out and defeated by fellow BJJ'er Wallid Ismail on December 17 in a BJJ match in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to a report from Luca Atalla, editor and executive director of Gracie Magazine, who was at this match, sent by phone to Renzo Gracie, Royce was choked out by Wallid in a short match, said to be a few minutes long.
Wallid applied the choke from what is known as the "clock position." Royce could not escape, but did not tap out, either. Instead he passed out from the choke. This match was a BJJ match, where both competitors wore traditional gi's, and not a NHB or Vale Tudo match. It was held at the famed Copacabana Arena (Arena Olimpica da Praia de Copacabana) in Rio.

Quick fight description- Royce made several unconventional moves (considered wrong moves) in response to Wallid's offensive advances. Gracie gave up his back and Wallid jumped at the opportunity. Ismael sunk in a choke and Royce tried to wiggle out, but had no chance. Royce did not tap and lost consciousness. It took almost an entire minute to revive Royce.

"Deu Zebra!!

In a stunning upset, reminiscent of Brazil's defeat in the World Cup, Royce Gracie
was upset by Wallid Ismail at the "II Rio Oscar de Jiu-Jitsu" on December 17, 1998.
In the premiere match on a sport jiu-jitsu card with 10 other fights, Gracie and Ismail fought for approximately 5 minutes when Ismail caught Gracie in a choke.
Gracie handled his loss in the same fashion that he has handled his numerous victories in no-holds barred competitions. "I congratulate Wallid on his victory. I will continue to train hard and I look forward to fighting again soon," he said.
